The CW released two first-look images Monday of actress Javicia Leslie, the first-ever Black Batwoman, in her redesigned costume.
Leslie will be introduced in the upcoming second season of Batwoman as new character Ryan Wilder.
The actress collaborated with the show’s costume designer on the black and red suit so that audiences could tell the heroine is Black.
“I felt it was important that viewers could tell by the silhouette that Batwoman was a Black girl. With the form-fitting suit and beautiful Afro, we definitely nailed it!,” Leslie said in a statement.
She also posted photos on her Instagram page and the caption: “Blackwoman, I mean Batwoman is here!”

The new costume features a cowl showcasing Wilder’s natural curly hair with red streaks, shorter boots, and red gauntlets over her forearms. The full redesign will be introduced on episode 3.
“It was important for the new suit to define Javicia’s commanding presence while showcasing her athleticism and allowing her the freedom to express the physical nature of Batwoman, all while looking ultra-cool in the process!” said costume designer Maya Mani.
Leslie replaced previous series lead Ruby Rose, who departed the show after its first season.
The original Batwoman character of Kate Kane will be replaced by new character Ryan Wilder, who is a lesbian and is introduced to audiences as living in her van with a plant to keep her company.
Season 2 of Batwoman will be premiering on The CW in January 2021.
