The royal wedding of Prince Harry and Meghan Markle, now the duke and duchess of Sussex, turned out to be one of the biggest television events of the year in the United States.

A massive 29.2 million viewers watched live coverage of the prince and the former Suits actress exchange vows Saturday at Windsor Castle in England, according to Nielsen.

The audience was divided among 15 channels in the U.S., including ABC, CBS, NBC, Fox News Channel, CNN, HLN, MSNBC, E!, PBS, TLC, Telemundo and Univision.

What’s even more astounding is that so many people rose early on a weekend to watch the ceremony, which started at 7 a.m. ET/4 a.m. PT in Markle’s hometown of Los Angeles.

Across the pond, the wedding was viewed by 18 million people, with the BBC drawing the largest audience, The Guardian reported.

That was less than the viewing figures for the 2011 wedding of Prince William and Kate Middleton, which drew an audience of 24 million viewers in the U.K.

Here in the 50 states, William and Kate’s wedding was watched by 22.7 million people.

To put the U.S. viewing audience of 29.2 million for Harry and Meghan’s wedding into perspective, the Academy Awards drew an audience of 26.5 million viewers in March, while the Grammy Awards in January were seen by 19.8 million people.

Still, all of those numbers pale in comparison to Super Bowl LII, which saw 103.4 million viewers tune in on Feb. 4, to watch the Philadelphia Eagles beat the New England Patriots, and to see Justin Timberlake bring SexyBack during the halftime show.
