Aaliyah and her groundbreaking One in a Million album will be celebrated in a major way this weekend at the 2026 Essence Festival of Culture.

Organizers announced Missy Elliott has curated a special tribute called “Sunday Flowers,” celebrating the late R&B icon during the festival’s Sunday night programming.

The celebration marks the 30th anniversary of One in a Million. Released in 1996, the influential album introduced a futuristic sound crafted by Elliott and Timbaland.

Timbaland produced the LP and Elliott co-wrote several of its biggest hits, including title track “One in a Million” and “If Your Girl Only Knew,” helping to establish Aaliyah as one of the defining artists of her generation.

According to festival organizers, the tribute will celebrate Aaliyah’s life, music and lasting influence on both R&B and popular culture. Additional performers are expected to join Elliott on stage.

The event comes ahead of the 25th anniversary of Aaliyah’s death in a twin-engine plane crash in the Bahamas on Aug. 25, 2001. She was just 22 years old when she died.

The singer shares a special connection with the Essence Festival. She performed at the inaugural event in 1995 while still a teenager, appearing on a lineup that included Luther Vandross and Aretha Franklin.

The 2026 Essence Festival takes place July 3–5 in New Orleans, and tickets are available via Ticketmaster. This year’s performers include music legend Patti LaBelle, R&B divas Brandy & Monica, rappers Cardi B and Latto, and singer-songwriter Kehlani.

The Aaliyah tribute will be held at the Superdome and is expected to be one of the biggest draws at the festival.

The singer’s original choreographer, Fatima Robinson, is also involved. Robinson recently posted a rehearsal video on Instagram, showing dancers preparing for the event.

“Haven’t visited this routine in over 25 years,” she captioned the post. “I was 3 months pregnant while shooting this video back in the day and it’s so good to be in the room again with @swoopwhitebear @roography, 2 of Aaliyah’s original dancers creating a tribute… It’s bittersweet revisiting these moments but happy to be surrounded by a great team.”
