The American Film Institute (AFI) is shining a spotlight on Black films this year with its annual AFI Awards top 10 list.
Half of the movies on the list of 2020 honorees feature Black casts, creators, directors and production teams that told important Black stories, including George C. Wolfe’s Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom, Spike Lee’s Da 5 Bloods, Shaka King’s Judas and the Black Messiah, Disney Pixar’s Soul and Regina King’s One Night in Miami.
The institute also named its top 10 TV shows, including HBO’s Lovecraft Country, and an AFI “special award” is going to Lin-Manuel Miranda’s Hamilton.

“For 20 years, AFI Awards has been a moment to gather artists in one room with a singular goal – to create community over competition,” Bob Gazzale, AFI President & CEO said Monday in a press release. “This year we cannot gather but will instead celebrate each honoree by creating exclusive content to be shared with a global audience through AFI Movie Club, shining a proper light on excellence.”
Although the honorees will not be able to celebrate in person because of the pandemic, their content will be shown through the institute’s Movie Club starting next month and a “virtual benediction” will be held on Feb. 26 on YouTube and its website. Read the full list of honorees below:
