John Wick: Chapter 3 — Parabellum eliminated the competition at the weekend box office for a stunning $57 million debut.

Even more impressive, the sequel exceeded expectations and nearly doubled the opening weekend tally of the second film in the franchise, according to Comscore.

The first John Wick opened domestically to $14.4 million in 2014 while Chapter 2 doubled that figure, taking in $30.4 million. Now the third film has scored the franchise’s best debut.

Keanu Reeves returns as the titular assassin and is joined by Halle Berry, Lawrence Fishburne and Ian McShane. The Lionsgate release took in $92 million worldwide, also a franchise high.

Elsewhere, after three weeks on top, Disney-Marvel’s Avengers: Endgame slid to second place with a $29.4 million fourth weekend.

Pokémon Detective Pikachu came in third with $24.8 million. A Dog’s Journey opened in fourth with $8.0 million and The Hustle rounded out the top five with $6 million.

Notably absent from the top five was The Sun Is Also A Star, starring Yara Shahidi and Charles Melton.

The Warner Bros. young adult drama opened in a disappointing eighth place. Despite playing in 2,073 locations, it only managed a $2.6 million debut.

Based on Nicola Yoon’s YA novel, the film centers on a young woman (Shahidi) who falls for an aspiring poet (Melton) during a difficult time in her family’s life.
