This marks the third HBO special for Carmichael, who made his stand-up debut on the cable network in 2014 with Jerrod Carmichael: Love at the Store. Directed by Spike Lee, it was filmed at The Comedy Store. Next came Jerrod Carmichael: 8 in 2017. Carmichael’s two-part video diary Home Videos and Sermon On The Mount premiered on HBO in 2019.

Carmichael’s semi-autobiographical series, The Carmichael Show, boosted his profile for pushing the envelope on a major network sitcom.

He co-created, co-wrote, and produced the series, which aired for three seasons on NBC, from 2015 to 2017. The series opened the conversation to important conversations that included the Black Lives Matter movement, gun rights, LGBT issues, and inclusion in politics.

He also worked on Quentin Tarantino’s Django/Zorro crossover comic book series where he served as a writer.

Jerrod Carmichael: Rothaniel will air on Friday, April 1 at 9:00-10:00 p.m. ET/PT on HBO, and will be available to stream on HBO Max.

HBO will air an encore on Saturday, April 2 at 10:15 p.m. ET/PT. The special was taped in February before a live audience at the legendary Blue Note Jazz Club in New York City.  It was directed by Bo Burnham. Executive producers include Bo Burnham, Eli Bush, Matthew Vaughan, and Josh Senior.

To coincide with the release of his new special, Carmichael will host Saturday Night Live on April 2, with Gunna serving as musical guest, NBC announced Monday.
