Jennifer Hudson has been waiting (and developing) the upcoming Aretha Franklin biopic Respect for years.
Now the actress and singer is discussing just how much the Queen of Soul meant to her and how the church had an impact on both of their lives.
In a teaser trailer promoting Hudson’s new OWN Spotlight interview with Oprah Winfrey, the Oscar-winning performer says, “It was my dream to play her.”

OWN announced in a press release Monday the interview will air on July 20 and then stream on Discovery+ the next day.
During the special, Hudson also gives an impromptu performance of “Amazing Grace,” and says Aretha would hold a musical note and “let it simmer.”
Respect will be released in theaters starting Aug. 13. As previously reported, the film was delayed multiple times due to the ongoing coronavirus pandemic.
The first trailer for the movie premiered last year at the BET Awards, and the cast includes Forest Whitaker, Audra McDonald, Queen Latifah, Marc Maron, Tate Donovan, Tituss Burgess and Sky Dakota Turner.
OWN Spotlight: Oprah and Jennifer Hudson is executive produced by Oprah Winfrey and Tara Montgomery.
The special airs Tuesday, July 20 at 10 pm ET/PT on OWN. Watch a preview for the special below:
