Janet Hubert has shared details on how things are going with Will Smith after the two ended their years-long feud on HBO Max’s The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air Reunion.
In a new interview, the actress who played the original Aunt Viv on the 1990s series, said she and Smith now “text each other back and forth all the time.”
“As a matter of fact, we have a very good relationship. I meant it with all my heart when I hugged him, because I saw that little boy, that little 21-year-old boy. Had we had an opportunity to talk back then, I think this would have never happened,” Hubert told People magazine Thursday.

The actress added that things are much different than when the two appeared together on The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air.
“He was in a place, and I was in a place, we were both in a bad place. When you’re both in a bad place and there’s no communication, you have to talk. So it’s been wonderful, it’s been lovely to have him back in my sphere,” she explained.
During the on-air reunion special last fall, Huber revealed she was struggling with personal issues on her last season of the show. She said she was pregnant and in an abusive marriage. Losing her job only made things worse.
“I lost everything. Reputation. Everything. And I understand you were able to move forward, but you know those words, calling a Black woman difficult in Hollywood, is the kiss of death,” Hubert recalled.
Smith told her he was a kid when he starred on the show and having his own family now made him more mature.
After sharing their emotions together, Smith thanked Hubert and hugged her. “You’re still my Aunt Viv,” he said.
Now the actress is back to getting parts in Hollywood.
“I don’t know if it’s a comeback,” she told People. “I haven’t come from anywhere; I’ve been here. It’s just now … I always had to prove myself. I also had to walk in with a presupposition, and I don’t have to do that anymore, which is really lovely.”
She recently made a guest appearance on FX’s Pose and has a guest role as Miss May Miller in The Last O.G..
The 65-year-old actress can also be seen in the second season of the HBO Max series Love Life.
“Work is the best medicine. Being able to be an artist again, not just an actress, but an artist… To have it come back to me at such a late age, maybe these are the best years of my life,” she said.
Although Hubert describes her feud with Smith as a “scar” that has healed, she says she is in a better headspace than before. “Now it feels very peaceful.”
