‘Good Boys’ Laughs Off Competition for Surprise Victory at Box Office

Good Boys (Universal Pictures)

Despite facing competition from a string of newcomers, Good Boys laughed its way to victory at the weekend box office.

The R-rated comedy about three sixth grade boys who set off on a wild adventure debuted in the top spot with an estimated $21 million, according to Comscore.

The film exceeded expectations to score the biggest opening for an original comedy this year, and the year’s second best debut of any comedy after Tyler Perry’s Madea Family Funeral premiered with $27 million in March.

Good Boys stars pint-sized actors Jacob Tremblay, Keith L. Williams, and Brady Noon. Rounding out the cast are Molly Gordon, Will Forte, Lil Rel Howery, and Midori Francis.

The Universal release comes from producers Seth Rogen and Evan Goldberg, and is directed by Gene Stupnitsky. It played in 3,204 theaters, for a per location average of $6,554.

In second place, Fast & Furious: Presents Hobbs & Shaw brought in another $14.1 million. The high-octane thriller, also from Universal, has made $133.7 million domestically since it debuted three weeks ago.

The Lion King was third with $11.9 million, and has now earned $496.1 million in North America over five weeks.

Crash landing in fourth place was newcomer The Angry Birds Movie 2, with a muted $10.5 million weekend debut. Since opening Wednesday, the animated sequel has made a total of $16.2 million.

That was far less than the original film in 2016, which earned $38 million in its opening weekend. Based on a popular phone app and video game, the sequel features the voices of Jason Sudeikis, Josh Gad, Leslie Jones, and Awkwafina.

Rounding out the Top 5 was Lionsgate’s Scary Stories To Tell In The Dark. The horror film scared up another $10.05 million, for a two-week total of $40.2 million.

Just missing a debut in the top five was shark tale 47 Meters Down: Uncaged, which bit off $9.0 million for a sixth place opening. The sequel from Byron Allen’s Entertainment Studios Motion Pictures stars Sophie Nélisse, Corinne Foxx, Brianne Tju and is directed by Johannes Roberts.
