Former Florida gubernatorial candidate Andrew Gillum is joining CNN as a political commentator, he announced earlier this week on Twitter.

The Miami native became Florida’s first African-American nominee for governor when he won the state’s Democratic primary last summer. He narrowly lost the November general election to Republican Ron DeSantis after a recount.

The former Tallahassee mayor made his debut on the cable network Tuesday night, just days after the Florida Commission on Ethics announced it would look into an ethics complaint against him.

The ethics case involves accusations that Gillum accepted gifts and free trips from lobbyists when he was mayor of Tallahassee, according to the Miami Herald. Florida law bans state leaders from accepting gifts valued at more than $100.

Gillum, 39, told CNN’s Chris Cuomo he believes the ethics commission will find he did nothing wrong.

“I am confident that as we move through this and as a judge looks at the facts, they will determine that I have acted in complete compliance with the law,” Gillum said.
