Nate Parker returns to the director’s chair for the first time since 2019, with the psychological thriller Newborn, starring David Oyelowo.

Mansa Films announced this week the film will debut on Video on Demand (VOD) July 24. The thriller follows Chris Newborn (Oyelowo), who after seven years in solitary confinement returns to a world that no longer feels real, according to the official description.

Barry Pepper, Rukiya Bernard and Olivia Washington also have roles in the film.

Parker wrote and directed the thriller, which explores themes of family, resilience and redemption.

Newborn is a story that challenges audiences to reflect on love, sacrifice, and the resilience of the human spirit,” Parker said in a statement. “We’re thrilled to finally bring this film to audiences everywhere through its VOD release.”

The film had a limited theatrical release earlier this year AMC Theatres.

Parker previously directed, co-wrote and starred in The Birth of a Nation (2016), which earned multiple NAACP Image Award nominations and a Directors Guild of America nomination for Outstanding Directorial Achievement in First-Time Feature Film. His most recent film as director was American Skin (2019).

He launched Mansa with Oyelowo to bring projects to audiences focused on the Black experience.

The pair’s latest film, Newborn, will be available to rent or purchase through major digital platforms starting July 24. You can watch the trailer here.
