Professional boxer Danny Kelly Jr. was shot and killed in front of his family on Christmas Eve while driving in Temple Hills, Maryland.

The shooting may have been a case of possible road rage, the Prince George’s County Police Department said in a press release.

The attack occurred in the 4400 block of St. Barnabas Road, according to police. Kelly, 30, and his family were heading to a holiday dinner at approximately 4:40 p.m. when someone opened fire on their vehicle.

When officers arrived at the scene, they found Kelly unresponsive in the driver’s seat of an SUV suffering from multiple gunshot wounds. He was transported to an area hospital and pronounced dead a short time. His girlfriend and three children, ages 4, 7 and 9 were not injured.

“This is an absolutely heartbreaking loss for Mr. Kelly’s family and friends,” said PGPD Acting Major David Blazer of the Major Crimes Division. “He is not home with his loved ones today on Christmas, who are now mourning his loss instead of celebrating the holiday.”

Local station WUSA 9 reported another car pulled up next to the SUV and opened fire. Kelly lived in Clinton, Maryland, outside Washington, D.C., and the shooting left his family in shock.

“He was a wonderful dad,” his godmother Bernadine Walker told the TV station. “He loved his babies. He loved his children.”

Police urged anyone with information to contact local authorities. A reward of up to $25,000 is being offered for information leading to an arrest and indictment in the case.

Boxingscene.com said Kelly was a heavyweight fighter. The site said he had been out of the ring since October 2019. He had a career record of 10 wins, three defeats and 9 wins by knockout.
