Halle Berry, Will Smith and Ariana DeBose were among the winners at the 27th annual Critics Choice Awards Sunday night in Los Angeles.

The Bruised actress and director was honored with the SeeHer Award, which is given to an actress who portrays the accurate representation of women and girls in the media. The award was presented to Berry by Issa Rae.

The Academy Award winner revealed in her acceptance speech that the role in Bruised was originally not about a person of color and Berry tailored the role to herself as both the lead actress and director of the film.

“I’ve been in the business for 30 years, and I used to think that if I could play the part of a white man, then I was winning. But you know what, wanna know why that didn’t work? Because, if you didn’t know, I’m not a white man,” Berry said. “So, for those roles to work, they would have to be substantially changed. It would have to be written with the reality of my journey, in all of its beauty and all of its pain.”

Among other winners, Netflix’s drama The Power of the Dog won best picture, while Will Smith was named best actor for his portrayal of Venus and Serena Williams’ father Richard Williams in the tennis drama, King Richard.
