Paramount Pictures originally planned to release the sequel in theaters this December, but with half the nation’s movie theaters still shuttered because of the COVID-19 pandemic, the studio sold the film to Amazon last month.
The new movie will pick up the story with Murphy’s Prince Akeem discovering he has a son he never knew about in America, as he prepares to become king of fictional African nation Zamunda. To honor his father’s dying wish to groom his grandson as a future leader, Akeem and Semmi return to America.
Coming 2 America is directed by Craig Brewer (Hustle & Flow, Dolemite Is My Name). In addition to Murphy and Hall, John Amos, Shari Headley, James Earl Jones, Paul Bates and Vanessa Bell Calloway reprise their roles.
Additional cast members include Jermaine Fowler, Tracy Morgan, Leslie Jones, and Wesley Snipes.
