The Marvel Universe may be fiction, but the action got all too real in Washington state when part of a movie theater ceiling collapsed during a screening of Captain America: Brave New World.

According to the Wenatchee Valley Fire Department’s Facebook page, the incident happened just after 8 p.m. on Tuesday, Feb. 25, inside Liberty Cinema in Wenatchee, Washington.

At the time, only two people were in the theater watching the film.

Battalion Chief Cam Phillips shared with KING 5 television what the couple experienced in those tense moments.

“They heard some pops and cracking and the gentleman stood up and took a peek,” Phillips said. “[He] walked up toward the screen and as he looked up, he said, ‘Run!’”

The man’s girlfriend didn’t have a chance to react and was found covered in debris in her seat, just one row behind where the ceiling caved in, according to KING 5. She was not seriously injured.

In a statement to the TV station, Liberty Cinema’s owners said they’re working with local authorities to figure out what caused the collapse. They added that the theater is closed until further notice.

“The safety of our patrons and of our employees are of the utmost importance to me and remains my highest priority,” the owners said.

Wenatchee, an agricultural area known as the “Apple Capital of the World,” has a population of about 35,000, which might explain why the theater wasn’t packed at the time.

The cause of the collapse is still under investigation.

Since its President’s Day weekend premiere, Captain America: Brave New World has earned $295 million globally and $148 million at the domestic box office, according to Boxofficemojo.com.
