‘Black and Blue’ Makes $8.3 Million Box Office Debut

Action thriller Black And Blue didn’t quite make the top five this weekend at the box office, but it did make a respectable debut.

The Sony-Screen Gems drama, about a rookie New Orleans cop who accidentally witnesses her partners kill a drug dealer, stars Moonlight Oscar nominee Naomie Harris and Tyrese Gibson.

The film opened in sixth place, after taking in an estimated $8.3 million, according to Comscore. That gave the low-budget drama — which played in 2,062 theaters — a per location average of $4,037, slightly above analyst expectations. The film cost a reported $12 million to make.

The corrupt cop drama also stars Frank Grillo, Mike Colter, Beau Knapp, Nafessa Williams, and Reid Scott; and is directed by Deon Taylor. It follows what happens after officer Alicia West records the shooting on her body camera, and the crooked cops set out to kill her before she can upload the footage and expose them.

Elsewhere at the box office, Warner Bros.’ Joker, now in its fourth weekend, moved back into the top spot
with $18.9 million in North America.

Last week’s leader, Disney’s Maleficent: Mistress of Evil, was close behind in second place with $18.5 million.

MGM’s animated family comedy The Addams Family took third with $11.7 million.

Sony’s Zombieland: Double Tap was fourth with $11.6 million, and newcomer Countdown from STX opened in fifth place with $9.01 million.

Also worth mentioning, Kanye West’s Jesus Is King came in 16th place with $830,000. The documentary accompanied the release of West’s gospel album by the same name.

The film brings the rapper’s famed “Sunday Service” to life, and was shown exclusively on IMAX screens. It opened in 372 theaters, for a per location average of  $2,231.
