Basketball Wives star Brittany Renner says she followed her heart, but that wasn’t enough to keep her marriage to rapper Kevin Gates going for more than 52 days.
Renner, 33, announced the split this weekend, saying she and Gates, 39, divorced after tying the knot eight weeks ago.
“We got married April 6 and divorced May 28,” she told Bootleg Kev of Los Angeles radio station Real 92.3 at the BET Awards media tent in L.A.
“I followed my heart and that’s more than most people can say in this world. I have no shame in that,” the fitness model and author added.

Renner is the ex-girlfriend of P.J. Washington, and shares a 4-year-old son with the NBA star.
In the summer of 2024, the reality star announced she had embraced Islam after living a Hollywood lifestyle and discussing her “body count” in a September 2023 interview on the “Club Shay Shay” podcast.
Renner has been vocal about how Islam changed her life, and discussed the process of divorcing as a Muslim woman in her conversation with Bootleg Kev.
“There is a 90 day waiting period in Islam, where you have 90 days to see if you’re pregnant because then he would be responsible, right. But also in those 90 days, it’s for reconciliation, because Allah wants you to stay married. And then during those 90 days, you are not to entertain anybody romantically,” she explained.
The influencer said she entered the marriage to Gates thinking it would last forever.
“Honestly, I don’t think anybody gets married to not stay married. So the biggest thing for me is, this is a 90-day reset, just focusing on myself,” she said.
Urban Hollywood 411 was there on May 2, for the season 12 premiere of Basketball Wives in downtown L.A.
Renner and Gates walked the red carpet together and appeared happy as he stood behind her while she spoke with a handful of select media outlets. Unfortunately, she declined an interview with us, but she did speak with People magazine.
“All I can say is, is that I’m with the person that I quite literally dreamed of,” she told the outlet at the time. “And to be able to just wake up next to him and spend time with him, even to have him here behind me, it’s like so surreal. He’s just the most beautiful person inside and out that I’ve ever met.”
