Andre Braugher’s Cause of Death Released

The cause of death for Andre Braugher has been revealed — three days after the Homicide: Life on the Street and Brooklyn Nine-Nine actor died at age 61.

Braugher passed away on Monday, Dec. 11, after battling lung cancer, his longtime publicist Jennifer Allen said Thursday.

Allen told the New York Times the actor was diagnosed with the illness “a few months ago.”

Braugher did not publicly share that he was ill.

In 2014, he told the Times he wanted to live a healthier lifestyle and had “stopped drinking alcohol and smoking years ago.”

During his career, the actor took home two Primetime Emmy Awards — for his work on Homicide: Life on the Street and the 2006 miniseries Thief.

He also had roles on the comedy series Men of a Certain Age, as well as The Good Fight, and Law & Order: Special Victims Unit.

And he appeared in the films Glory (1989), Primal Fear (1996), Get on the Bus (1996), City of Angels (1998), Duets (2000), Salt (2010), and the critically acclaimed drama She Said (2022).

Braugher was born in Chicago in 1962. After graduating from high school, he earned a B.A. in theatre from Stanford University and a master’s degree from Juilliard.

He is survived by his wife, actress Ami Brabson, who played his spouse Mary Pembleton on Homicide. The actor also leaves behind sons Michael, Isaiah and John Wesley, his brother Charles, and his mom Sally.
