‘Abbott Elementary’ and ‘Bel-Air’ Among Winners at AAFCA TV Honors

The African American Film Critics Association (AAFCA) celebrated creators and performers for their work in the television industry at the 4th Annual AAFCA TV Honors on Saturday in Los Angeles.

Abbott Elementary picked up two awards — Best TV Comedy and Breakout star — for the show’s creator Quinta Brunson. The freshman ABC sitcom is also nominated for seven Emmy Awards this year.

Netflix’s Ozark won the AAFCA honor for Best TV Drama. Peacock’s Bel-Air picked up the award for Best New Show; ABC’s Women of the Movement won for Best Limited Series/Special and Apple TV+’s Pachinko picked up the award for Best International Production.

The HBO documentary series Black and Missing, about the fight to bring awareness to Black missing persons cases, won the award for Best Documentary.

There was a tie for Best Ensemble between Apple’s Swagger and HBO’s Winning Time: The Rise of the Lakers Dynasty.

Robin Thede, creator, writer, executive producer of HBO’s A Black Lady Sketch Show, won the award for Best Writing. Salli Richardson-Whitfield won for Best TV Directing for The Gilded Age.

Courtney B. Vance accepted the award for Best TV Acting, Male, for his work in 61st Street. Patina Miller won for Best TV Acting, Female for Power Book III: Raising Kanan, and accepted her award virtually.

AAFCA gave special achievement honors to Universal Studio Group Chairman Pearlena Igbokwe, who received the Ashley Boone Award. Alex Kurtzman picked up AAFCA’s Ally Award. AAFCA’s Inclusion Award went to the Warner Bros. Television Group.
