Nick Reiner, the 32-year-old son of filmmaker Rob Reiner and photographer Michele Singer Reiner, has been officially indicted in the killings of his parents.
A grand jury returned the indictment July 20, and it was unsealed Wednesday after months of evidence was reviewed behind closed doors, according to a news release from the Los Angeles County District Attorney’s Office.
The move brings the case one step closer to trial and allows prosecutors to bypass a public preliminary hearing, such as the five-day hearing in the D4vd murder case.
Reiner is facing two counts of first-degree murder, with prosecutors adding a special circumstance allegation that he used a knife and killed his parents by means of lying in wait.
Simply put, lying in wait means a suspect waited for or hid from the victims in order to ambush them. As an allegation, it is meant to show premeditation.
The special circumstance allegation makes Reiner eligible for the death penalty, but prosecutors said they have not yet decided whether to seek it.
Rob Reiner and Michele Reiner were found dead around 3:30 p.m. on Dec. 14, 2025, at their Brentwood home. Authorities say the couple had been stabbed, as previously reported.
Shortly after their bodies were discovered, Nick Reiner was taken into custody on suspicion of murder and charged in the case.
A night before tthe killings, Nick had reportedly attended a holiday party hosted by comedian Conan O’Brien with his parents. Rob and Nick reportedly got into a heated argument at the gathering and the filmmaker left.
In January, celebrity lawyer Alan Jackson withdrew from representing Nick. A public defender took over the case. Jackson said he was unable to continue because of circumstances beyond his control. The Associated Press reported Jackson stepped away from the case after Nick’s siblings said they would not pay for his legal defense.
Now prosecutors are moving forward toward trial.
“This was a profound betrayal by someone who was loved and trusted by the very people he is accused of killing,” said Los Angeles County District Attorney Nathan J. Hochman. “We hope that by having a grand jury return an indictment in this case it will bring us one step closer to a trial and achieving justice.”
Meanwhile, Reiner is seeking access to a trust fund worth at least $1.5 million. He is asking to use the money toward his legal defense.
He has pleaded not guilty and remains jailed without bail. His next pretrial hearing is scheduled for Sept. 15.
