A Different World drew millions of viewers in its Netflix debut, although Hillman College’s newest students could not unseat Monster: The Lizzie Borden Story.
The sequel to the beloved 1980s sitcom landed at No. 4 on the streamer’s global English-language TV chart with 4.2 million views for the week of Sept. 21–27, according to figures released Tuesday.
The 10-episode series premiered on Sept. 24, so the data only includes four days of viewing.
The sequel from executive producers Felicia Pride and Debbie Allen made a stronger showing in the United States, where it ranked as the second most-watched show behind Monster: The Lizzie Borden Story.
The new version of A Different World follows the next generation of Hillman students, including Deborah, played by Maleah Joi Moon. She is the daughter of original-series favorites Dwayne Wayne and Whitley Gilbert, with Kadeem Hardison and Jasmine Guy reprising their roles.
Original cast members Darryl M. Bell and Cree Summer also returned. Joining the cast in guest roles are Tichina Arnold as Darlene Duvall, Joshua Suiter as Andre, and Raven Goodwin as Dr. Brooklyn Boyer.

Meanwhile, Monster: The Lizzie Borden Story collected 14.5 million views for the week, marking a 20 percent increase from the previous week.
Reality competition Wonka’s The Golden Ticket debuted at No. 2 with 4.6 million views, after arriving on the platform Sept. 23. It was followed by teen rowing drama Crew Girl at No. 3 with 4.5 million.
With A Different World in fourth place, season 2 of The Gentlemen was a very close fifth after also logging 4.2 million views. This was the British crime drama’s fourth week on the chart.
On the global English-language movie chart, Unabomber premiered in the top spot with 16.4 million views. Starring Russell Crowe, Jacob Tremblay, Annabelle Wallis, and Shailene Woodley, the drama is inspired by real events about Ted Kaczynski’s path from a teenage Harvard prodigy to domestic terrorist.
Best of the Best ranked second with 7.3 million views. Co-written by Hasan Minhaj, the dance comedy stars Maitreyi Ramakrishnan and Priyanka Kedia as besties who join UCLA’s cutthroat Bollywood-fusion dance team.
It was followed by A Minecraft Movie, with 7 million views. The 2025 adventure comedy is based on a video game and stars Jason Momoa and Jack Black.
Riot landed at No. 4 with 4.4 million views, while Robert De Niro’s crime thriller The Whisper Man came in fifth place with 4 million in its fifth week.
