The woman accused of opening fire on Rihanna and A$AP Rocky’s Los Angeles house, while the couple and their children were on the property, has been declared mentally competent to stand trial.
Ivanna Lisette Ortiz, 36, pleaded not guilty through her attorney on Tuesday after a grand jury returned a 14-count indictment.
The indictment was unsealed Wednesday, Sept. 30, in a downtown Los Angeles courtroom, a day after a judge said Ortiz should stand trial, the Associated Press reported.
Ortiz, of Orlando, Florida, appeared behind a partition and wore yellow jail-issued clothes.
She faces one count of attempted murder, 10 counts of assault with an assault weapon, and three counts involving shooting at an inhabited dwelling or camper. She was ordered to remain jailed on $2.6 million bail and is due back in court on Oct. 29 for a pretrial hearing.
“This is a person who wanted to kill Rihanna,” Deputy District Attorney Alexander Bott told reporters outside court. “Everyone else was collateral damage.”
Earlier this year, Bott alleged Ortiz fired “about 20 rounds at the house.”
The shooting unfolded Sunday, March 8, in the Beverly Crest neighborhood of Los Angeles, near the border with Beverly Hills. LAPD officers responded just after 1 p.m.
No one was injured, but bullets pierced an Airstream trailer on the property, a wall surrounding the house, and a neighboring home. Shots also struck the exterior wall of a nursery where the couple’s children were at the time. Police said the suspect used an AR-15-style rifle.
The Grammy-winning singer, born Robyn Rihanna Fenty, told investigators she and partner A$AP Rocky were inside the trailer when the gunfire erupted.
Authorities said the suspect fled in a white Tesla. Ortiz was arrested later that day at the Sherman Oaks Galleria in the San Fernando Valley area of Los Angeles, about 20 minutes away. Police said a weapon was recovered.
Ortiz previously pleaded not guilty in March and was ordered to stay away from Rihanna and A$AP Rocky. She has been jailed since her arrest. Her bail was initially set at $10.2 million before a judge lowered the amount in March.
As media outlets searched her social media accounts, TMZ found a YouTube video that appeared to show Ortiz ranting about the singer.
“She looks really stupid and corny and everyone knows it,” the woman in the video said. “The way that Rihanna wants to kill me, she’s the one who wants to kill me.”
TMZ also reported that Ortiz had previously been involuntarily committed and lost custody of her then-10-year-old child.
Public records showed Ortiz was a licensed speech pathologist.
According to the website Arrests.org, she had three previous arrests in Florida, including one for battery domestic violence.
If convicted as charged in Los Angeles, she faces up to life in prison.
