‘The Dutchman’ Trailer: A Subway Encounter Plunges André Holland and Kate Mara Into Chaos

Seduction, race and manipulation intersect in the trailer for The Dutchman.

André Holland (The Big Cigar) and Kate Mara (House of Cards) lead the cast of the film, which arrives in theaters on Jan. 2.

Holland stars as Clay, a high-achieving but emotionally unavailable businessman trying to repair his marriage after his wife Kaya (Zazie Beetz) cheats.

Mara plays seductive stranger Lula, who introduces herself to Clay a New York City subway. After Lula slinks up to Clay on the train, she asks: “Would you like to be down with me?”

He’s caught off guard by the fiery redhead’s bold approach, especially after she removes her panties. Clay takes the bait and soon gets entangled in Lula’s web. But there’s more to the temptress than he anticipated.

“What do you want from me?” Clay asks after she threatens his life.

Tension builds between the two and a series of bizarre incidents begin to unfold, with the people around Clay demanding answers.

Aldis Hodge (Cross) and Stephen McKinley Henderson (Fences) also star.

The psychological thriller is based on Amiri Baraka’s classic 1964 play Dutchman, with the film offering a modern take on race and sexual politics.

Directed by Andre Gaines, who also co-wrote the script with Qasim Basir, the film debuted in March at the SXSW Festival.

It currently has a 67% score out of 100 on Rotten Tomatoes, with critics describing the film as “haunting” with “superb” performances.

The thriller comes from Rogue Pictures, Inaugural Entertainment, and Cinemation Studios.
