Insecure star Jay Ellis has a date with network TV.
The actor, who more recently had a role in the 2022 film Top Gun: Maverick, is joining ABC’s The Rookie universe in the pilot for a spinoff titled The Rookie: North.
Ellis will play Alex Holland, a man who “believed his mid-life wasn’t worthy of a crisis,” per the official description provided to Variety. “But after a violent home invasion ignites a dormant purpose, Alex battles a lifetime of failed commitments by joining the Pierce County Police Department as its oldest rookie.”
Alex will be put to the test and must prove to his skeptical training officer, his fellow rookies, and himself, that he’s finally found something worth fighting for.

The Rookie creator Alexi Hawley will write and direct the pilot, and serve as an executive producer. Ellis is a producer in addition to taking on the lead role.
The series comes from Lionsgate Television and 20th Television.
Ellis played Lawrence on Issa Rae’s beloved HBO dramedy series Insecure. His character was so popular that fans called themselves the #LawrenceHive. The actor also directed an episode of the series in season 4, he shared on social media.
Since then, he’s had roles in Hulu’s History of the World: Part II, Netflix comedy series Running Point, and Peacock’s All Her Fault, according to his IMDb page.
