Emergency averted. 9-1-1 is returning for season 7 on a new network — ABC.
Despite being its most-watched show, Fox opted not to renew the series, with the news coming out Monday.
“It has been an honor to be the founding network of 9-1-1 and we are grateful to Ryan Murphy, Brad Falchuk and Tim Minear, together with Angela Bassett, Peter Krause, Jennifer Love Hewitt, Oliver Stark, Aisha Hinds, Kenneth Choi, Ryan Guzman and the rest of the cast and crew, and 20th Television for delivering such an impactful series,” Fox said in a statement. “We wish them well after 9-1-1’s final Fox season concludes.”

But just as soon as Fox announced it would not move forward with the first responder drama, ABC swooped in and said the show is joining its 2023-2024 lineup.
“Thanks to the creative drive of Ryan Murphy, Brad Falchuk and Tim Minear, as well as the talented cast, 9-1-1 has been one of the most defining and original dramas on network television over the last six seasons and we are honored to bring it to the esteemed group of series on ABC,” said Craig Erwich, president of Disney Television Group, said in a press release. “It’s a privilege to keep ‘9-1-1’ in the family with 20th Television producing, and we look forward to telling more heart-racing and uplifting stories about these beloved characters on our air.”
The series was created by Ryan Murphy, Brad Falchuk and Tim Minear. Executive producers include Alexis Martin Woodall, Angela Bassett, Peter Krause, John J. Gray, Kristen Reidel and Juan Carlos Coto.
9-1-1 premiered in 2018, and currently ranks as the No. 1 broadcast drama in the coveted adults 18-49 (1.0/8) demo, per Nielsen figures.
According to Deadline, Fox’s decision to drop the show was “financial.” The series is said to be one of the priciest on TV, costing a reported $9 million-$10 million per episode to produce.
The season 6 finale of 9-1-1 will air Monday, May 15 on Fox.
Despite ending its relationship with the show, Fox renewed the spinoff 9-1-1: Lone Star for a fifth season.
The team behind Lone Star shared the news with fans Monday afternoon on social media.
“The 126 isn’t going anywhere! #911LoneStar is returning for season 5!” read a tweet on the show’s official Twitter account.
