Wendy Williams is breaking her silence about the legal guardianship she has been under for the past three years.
The former talk show host called into “The Breakfast Club” radio show on Thursday, Jan. 16, to discuss her situation with host Charlamagne Tha God.
“I am not cognitively impaired, you know what I’m saying? But I feel like I am in prison,” Williams said during the interview.
Her comments come in response to court documents filed in November 2024 by her court-appointed guardian, Sabrina Morrissey, who described Williams in the documents as “cognitively impaired and permanently incapacitated.”
Joining the call was Williams’ niece, Alex Finnie, who described what family members say are poor living conditions. According to Finnie, Williams is confined to a small room in a New York City apartment building under heavy security, with only basic necessities — calling it a “luxury prison.”
“This system is broken,” Williams said. “This system that I’m in, you know, this system has falsified a lot.”
Williams, 60, was diagnosed with primary progressive aphasia and frontotemporal dementia in 2023, according to her guardian.
The diagnosis followed her placement under guardianship in 2022, after Wells Fargo filed a petition in a New York court, citing concerns she was being financially exploited.
In her interview, Williams referred to Morrissey as “the person… holding me hostage.”
Williams became emotional while discussing her uncertainty about seeing her father for his 94th birthday in Miami. “My life is… f–ed up,” she said.
Williams also said her phone was confiscated, and she was given a new device that only allows her to call out, but she cannot receive calls.
She added that the elevator on her floor of the building where she lives is operated by a key, and she cannot leave that floor.
Charlamagne, who worked with Williams from 2006 to 2008 on her radio show The Wendy Williams Experience, has been vocal about her situation and continues to support her publicly.
Morrissey is currently in a legal battle with Lifetime over the airing of Where is Wendy Williams?, a documentary about Williams’ life. Morrissey attempted to block the film’s release, but it aired in February 2024 despite her objections.
