Van Jones nearly broke down in tears during his commentary on CNN Sunday, after President Joe Biden announced he was exiting the 2024 presidential race.
Jones, a senior political commentator on CNN, described Biden as “family” during a live a segment with Kaitlan Collins after news broke that the president would not seek a second term.
“At the end of the day, this is a family matter. Joe Biden’s body might not be as strong as it used to be, his language skills may not be as sharp as they used to be — [but] his heart is as big as ever,” Jones said.
He then praised Biden and said, “This is the difference between a politician and a leader.”

The CNN commentator’s voice started to shake as he compared Biden suspending his campaign — after a disastrous debate performance — to an aging grandfather finally giving up his car keys because he can no longer drive safely.
“Then you finally get the keys back, and then you just cry — because this is somebody that you love, this is somebody that you care about, this is somebody who was there for you, this is somebody — you wouldn’t be here without him, and you had to take something from him,” Jones said.
He went on to call Biden a “great” man.
“Politics is politics. But this is a human moment for one of the great humans in America,” he continued. “This is a huge moment for him, for his family, for all of us who love him, for all of us who want him to get across the finish line. But if you’re a young person watching this — this is leadership. This is patriotism. This is what it means to put the country first, and put the party first, and put the cause first.”
Jones then foreshadowed next month’s Democratic National Convention and said viewers should get ready to see people cry, scream, cheer and give Biden the credit he deserves.
“I hope we take a moment to honor this man and to love this man. I love Joe Biden, I appreciate what he’s done, and a lot of people are heartbroken today – even if it’s the right thing, it’s still just horrible,” Jones said.
Jones previously worked in the Obama administration as part of Biden’s Middle Class Task Force and said he was thankful the then-vice president “picked me out of the puppy pile.”
