With Meghan Markle’s wedding to Prince Harry just nine days away, media coverage of the former Suits actress and her family is intensifying in the British press.
Lately, there has been a fixation by the paparazzi and the tabloids – also known as red tops – on Meghan’s father, Thomas Markle, a Daytime Emmy Award-winning retired lighting director.
Respected British newspaper, The Guardian, has described the exhaustive coverage of the retiree as an “obsession,” adding that it is a sign of “the abuse” that could eventually come to Meghan.
Thomas Markle left the glitz of Hollywood and now lives a quiet life in Rosarito, Mexico. Since December, the British tabloids have been more than happy to travel south of the border to document his every move.
An “exclusive” by The Sun was published on May 8, with the headline: “Meghan Markle’s dad Thomas looks up his daughter and Prince Harry at internet café ahead of Royal Wedding.”
An editor from the paper tweeted a link to the story, which showed an elderly Markle sitting in front of a PC with pictures of Harry and Meghan on the screen.

Other tabloid stories have featured paparazzi photos showing Thomas Markle brushing up on British history by sitting in a Starbucks glancing at a picture book titled “Images of Britain.”
He has also been shown flashing a peace sign at photographers, walking around Rosarito and being fitted for a suit – possibly for the royal wedding.
And in December, the Daily Mail broke the exclusive saying it had found Markle in Mexico. The paper’s reporters even talked to local residents who said “Markle enjoys spending time relaxing at home, [and] shops at Walmart.”
According to The Guardian, the tabloids have pretty much left Meghan alone, for now. But don’t expect them to behave forever.
“Nobody would be so coarse as to print a picture of her at the gym, or reading a how-to on the correct usage of British titles,” the story said, adding that the groundwork had been set or future abuse.
“Everything you do, they know about it. Everything they know, they can prove. Everything your relatives do, they have caught on camera,” columnist Zoe Williams wrote. “It’s rosy now, sunshine, but wait until they’re bored five years down the line and they find out that you once shouted at a maid.”
Prince Harry and Meghan will exchange wedding vows on Saturday, May 19.
