Tina Turner says her early years were “terrible,” yet she overcame and is now enjoying the riches of her success.
The music legend sat down with The New York Times to discuss a musical about her life, and stepping away from the spotlight.
“I was just tired of singing and making everybody happy,” she said. “That’s all I’d ever done in my life.”
The 79-year-old star said she’s enjoying retirement after facing many challenges earlier in life.
“I had a terrible life,” Turner stated. “I just kept going. You just keep going, and you hope that something will come.”

Turner became a star in her 20s under the guidance of then-husband and singing partner, the late Ike Turner. She escaped his abuse in her 30s, and launched a new music career in her 40s.
“I don’t know if I could ever forgive all that Ike ever did to me,” but “Ike’s dead. So we don’t have to worry about him,” she said.
The hitmaker also admitted she’s never spoken publicly about the full extent of the abuse.
“I think I’m ashamed,” she explained. “I feel I told enough.”
