Tiffany Haddish is speaking out about the abuse she says she suffered as a child while living with her mom.
In a preview clip for an upcoming appearance on David Letterman’s Netflix show, My Next Guest Needs No Introduction, Haddish broke down while discussing personality changes in her mom, Leola, following a car accident.
“I didn’t want to be with my mom no more,” Haddish said about life after the collision, which occurred when she was almost nine years old. “She had become very violent and very verbally abusive. You never knew who she was going to be. Every day was like a different day.”

Through tears, the actress and comedian revealed that the accident “changed everything” about her mom. “I thought, like, maybe someone else jumped inside her body, like ‘Where’s my mommy?'” Haddish recalled.
Haddish begged to live with her grandmother instead, but her mother angrily denied the request. Then, when she was 13, her mother was hospitalized following an altercation with a neighbor. Leola was diagnosed as schizophrenic, and the future Girls Trip star spent the rest of her youth living in group homes.
“It was more like prison,” Haddish said about the experience in her 2017 memoir, The Last Black Unicorn.

Haddish isn’t the only celebrity to sit down with Letterman for season 2 of the series. Kanye West will discuss his mental health issues, and is shown in a preview comparing his bipolar disorder to having a “sprained brain.”
“It’s a health issue that has a strong stigma on it and people are allowed to say anything about it and discriminate in any way,” he said. “This is like a sprained brain, like having a sprained ankle. And if someone has a sprained ankle, you’re not going to push on him more.”
Other guests in the new season include Ellen DeGeneres, Melinda Gates and race car driver Lewis Hamilton. My Next Guest Needs No Introduction returns May 31 on Netflix. All five episodes will begin streaming at the same time.
