The Weeknd, Pink, Drake Take Top Honors at Billboard Music Awards

The Weeknd cleaned up Sunday night at the 2021 Billboard Music Awards.

The singer-songwriter walked into the show with 16 nominations and took home a leading ten awards — including top artist, top male artist, top R&B artist, top Hot 100 song for “Blinding Lights” and top R&B album for “After Hours.”

“I wanna take this opportunity to thank you, my parents,” the Canadian performer said on stage. “I am the man I am today because of you. And thank you to my fans, of course. I do not take this for granted.”

New York rapper Pop Smoke, who was fatally shot in the Hollywood Hills in February 2020, was named top new artist, top rap artist, top male rap artist, his record “Shoot for the Stars, Aim for the Moon” won top rap album and top Billboard 200 album.

Among other winners, Pink received the “Icon Award,” Trae Tha Truth earned the “Change Maker Award,” and Drake was named “Artist of the Decade,” based on “activity on the Billboard Hot 100 songs chart and the Billboard 200 albums tally, as well as social media data and touring revenue from Billboard Boxscore.”

The “Hotline Bling” rapper accepted the award with his 3-year-old son Adonis by his side.

“I wanna dedicate this award to my friends, to my longtime collaborators, I wanna dedicate this award to all my peers… to my beautiful family, and to you,” he said as he lifted Adonis up. The toddler then started to cry while he held his dad’s award.

Hosted by Nick Jonas, the Billboard Music Awards were held at the Microsoft Theater in downtown Los Angeles.
