The new Shondaland series The Residence is a screwball whodunit with a glamorous White House backdrop.

Netflix released a first look photo on Dec. 10, from the upcoming murder mystery.

Per the official description, the action unfolds during a disastrous state dinner. When the dust settles, there’s a dead body, 157 suspects, and 132 rooms to search.

Uzo Aduba (Orange Is the New Black) plays Cordelia Cupp, an eccentric detective with the Metropolitan Police Department. Cupp is working on the night of the state dinner when the murder takes place.

Randall Park (Fresh Off the Boat) co-stars as FBI Special Agent Edwin Park. He partners with Cupp but is skeptical of her unique investigative style.

“This case is unsolvable to everyone except Cordelia Cupp,” Aduba said in an interview with Netflix’s Tudum blog.

The cast also includes Giancarlo Esposito, Jason Lee, Ken Marino, Edwina Findley, Molly Griggs, Dan Perrault, and Al Mitchell.

Netflix revealed the late Andre Braugher was cast as White House chief usher A.B. Wynter, but the Emmy-winning actor died in December 2023. The streamer shared a picture of Braugher at a table read with the rest of the cast on Tudum.

The first season of The Residence will consist of eight one-hour episodes.

Celebrity guest stars include Jane Curtin, Kylie Minogue, Julian McMahon, Al Franken, Isiah Whitlock Jr., Taran Killam and more.

Scandal writer Paul William Davies is the creator, showrunner, executive producer, and writer of the show. Davies was inspired by Kate Andersen Brower’s nonfiction work, The Residence: Inside the Private World of the White House.

Shonda Rhimes and Betsy Beers are also executive producers.

The Residence debuts March 20, 2025 on Netflix.
