Saturday Night Live star Chris Redd was hospitalized Wednesday, Oct. 26, after a man attacked him outside a New York City comedy club.

The assault happened around 9:40 p.m. in front of the Comedy Cellar, where the comedian was scheduled to perform later in the evening, police told local news station WABC-TV.

Redd drove up to the venue in the Greenwich Village section of the city, and a man dressed like a security guard punched him in the face.

TMZ reported Redd was bleeding after being struck and blood could be seen on the sidewalk. The website said the attacker tried to steal a chain from Redd’s neck. But the links on the chain broke and the pieces fell to the ground.

Bystanders rendered aid before Redd was transported to an area hospital. The suspect fled before police arrived and remained on the run.

Redd exited SNL in September after five seasons, ahead of the show’s 48th season premiere.

Last week, HBO Max announced his new comedy special titled Chris Redd: Why Am I Like This? is scheduled to premiere on Nov. 3.

The comedian is also set to star in the feature film Cyber Monday that’s in development at Universal.
