Regina King Scores Multi-Year Production Deal With Netflix

Oscar winner Regina King has inked a multi-year deal to develop film and television projects for Netflix.

King, who starred in If Beale Street Could Talk and Poetic Justice, to name a few titles, signed a first-look contract with the streaming giant Wednesday. The actress’  production company Royal Ties will develop upcoming projects for the streamer, with her sister, Reina King, heading up production.

“I am beyond thrilled to join the Netflix family,” Regina said in a press release. “They are at the top of their game and as an artist I am so excited to come play in this wonderful sandbox they have created for storytellers.”

Netflix Chief Content Officer Ted Sarandos said, “Regina King is a multi-faceted talent both behind and in front of the camera.”

He added: “She’s been a trailblazer for years, with boundless creativity and impeccable taste in projects, and we couldn’t be more thrilled that she will bring her formidable talents to Netflix.”

In recent years, King has tried her hand at directing and producing. She directed and produced 2018’s The Finest, a TV movie, and she has helmed episodes of HBO’s Insecure, ABC’s Scandal, and NBC’s This Is Us, to list a few examples.

King also previously starred in the Netflix series Seven Seconds. The 2018 crime drama about the death of a 15-year-old African-American boy in Jersey City that set off a police cover-up , earned King an Emmy Award for her portrayal of Latrice Butler, the boy’s grieving mother.
