The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences announced the shortlists of Oscar contenders in 10 categories on Tuesday, including Best Original Song.
Tyler Perry’s The Six Triple Eight has one song in that category — “The Journey” performed by Grammy Award-winning artist H.E.R.
“The Journey” is an emotionally charged ballad about achieving your dreams even when faced with obstacles, written by Diane Warren.
Last month, while Warren was part of a panel discussion at Deadline’s Sound & Screen Film musical showcase, she compared H.E.R.’s vocals with the late Whitney Houston.
“It’s Whitney level,” Warren said. “I don’t even know if anyone’s ever heard her sing like this.”

Pharrell Williams’ dance party single “Piece By Piece” from his Lego animated biopic of the same name and Selena Gomez’s “Mi Camino” from Emilia Pérez also made the list.

The film academy also announced the shortlists for Documentary Feature, Short Film, International Feature Film, Makeup and Hairstyling, Music (original score), Animated and Live Action Short Film, Sound, and Visual Effects.
The lists will be narrowed down when the nominations for the 97th Oscars are unveiled on Friday, Jan. 17, 2025.
The awards will be handed out on Sunday, March 2, 2025, at the Dolby Theatre at Ovation Hollywood in Los Angeles and will be televised live on ABC and streamed live on Hulu.
