Fans of the Starz series Power get to see a little of this and a little of that in the new Power Book III: Raising Kanan trailer that dropped Monday.

The video opens with beats from the Black Sheep 1990s classic “The Choice Is Yours,” as viewers are introduced to the childhood days of lead character Kanan Stark (played by MeKai Curtis).

His queenpin mother Raquel Thomas (played by Patina Miller) says “These streets don’t play, Kananin an ominous voiceover. In the next scene, Raquel offers, “You’re only as good as your crew.” Kanan responds, “No doubt.”

At another point Raquel says: “It’s always been Kanan and me versus everybody” as the police start closing in on her drug business.

Joining Miller and Curtis in the series set in New York’s Jamaica, Queens neighborhood are Omar Epps (Love & Basketball), London Brown (Ballers), Malcolm Mays (Rebel), Shanley Caswell (The Conjuring), Lovie Simone (Greenleaf), Toby Sandeman (She’s Gotta Have It), Joey Bada$$ (Mr. Robot) and Hailey Kilgore (The Village).

The spinoff is the prequel of Kanan’s story (portrayed by Curtis “50 Cent” Jackson in the original series) and explains why he was eventually shot and killed.

This is the second Power spin-off after Power Book II: Ghost. The new series is created by  Sascha Penn, who was a writer on the original Power series.

Power Book III: Raising Kanan, will premiere Sunday, July 18 on Starz. Watch the trailer below:
