NASCAR driver Bubba Wallace appeared on ABC’s The View Tuesday to discuss conspiracy theories that the noose placed in his team’s garage was a hoax.
“It’s simple-minded people like that, the ones that are afraid of change, they use everything in their power to defend what they stand up for… instead of trying to listen and understand what’s going on,” Wallace told co-host Sunny Hostin.

NASCAR called for an investigation into the incident after the noose was discovered in Wallace’s garage stall on Sunday at the Talladega Superspeedway in Alabama.
“I was hurt and I was sad that people would go to those measures. I wouldn’t say I’m shocked because we see the stuff that goes on in the world,” Wallace told Whoopi Goldberg.
Though he did not see the noose — one of his team members discovered it, and he said the situation enforces his belief that the sport struggles with racism.

“This just shows how much further we have to go as a sport, but also as a nation… systemic racism is a problem from every aspect of life,” Wallace added.
He drew national attention this month after calling on NASCAR to ban Confederate flags. Though the driver is being lauded by progressives for his activism, he has come under fire by some white NASCAR drivers over his calls to ban the flag.
Meanwhile on Tuesday evening, the FBI said it had determined Wallace was not the victim of a hate crime after 15 agents worked on the case.
“After a thorough review of the facts and evidence surrounding this event, we have concluded that no federal crime was committed,” FBI Special Agent Jonnie Sharp said in a joint statement with Birmingham U.S. Attorney Jay Town.
“The FBI learned that garage number 4, where the noose was found, was assigned to Bubba Wallace last week… Although the noose is now known to have been in garage number 4 in 2019, nobody could have known Mr. Wallace would be assigned to garage number 4 last week,” the statement added.
