The 50th NAACP Image Awards honoring entertainers and writers of color were held Saturday night at the Dolby Theatre in Hollywood, with Black Panther and Black-ish picking up top prizes in the film and television categories.
Beyoncé nabbed the night’s biggest award, Entertainer of the Year, beating Chadwick Boseman, LeBron James, Regina King, and Ryan Coogler in the category.
While accepting her award, the chart-topping singer acknowledged her fellow nominees.
“I’m honored to be included among all of you and to be part of a vital, thriving, beautiful community,” she said, while reading notes praising each nominee for their individual contributions to the entertainment industry.

On the film side, Black Panther was the big winner, picking up the Outstanding Motion Picture Award. Chadwick Boseman was named Outstanding Actor in a Motion Picture and his co-star, Letitia Wright, won the Breakthrough Performance prize for her role in the Disney/Marvel film.
In the television categories, Black-Ish was named Outstanding Comedy Series. The ABC comedy also picked up acting awards for its stars, Anthony Anderson and Tracee Ellis Ross.
Starz hit Power was named Outstanding Drama Series. On the acting front, Power star Omari Hardwick and Empire actress Taraji P. Henson nabbed awards in the drama series categories.
In the special awards categories, Congresswoman Maxine Waters (D-Los Angeles) was honored with the NAACP Chairman’s Award.
“After a long career journey, tonight I stand before you as the first woman and the first African-American to chair the powerful U.S. House Financial Services Committee,” she said. “Yes, I got the gavel and I’m not afraid to use it.”
Meanwhile, Jay-Z received the President’s Award for distinguished public service and thanked the “beautiful women” in his life, including his grandmother.
Legendary radio host Tom Joyner was honored with the Vanguard Award. During his acceptance speech, Joyner stunned the audience by announcing he would be leaving his long-running Tom Joyner Morning Show, after 25 years.
“At the end of this year I’ll be retiring from the radio,” he said.
Jussie Smollett was a no-show at the ceremony, but the controversial Empire actor was still mocked by presenter Chris Rock.
“I have to present an award,” Rock told the audience. “They said no Jussie Smollett jokes. Yeah, I know, I know. What a waste of light skin. You know what I could do with that light skin? That curly hair? My career would be outta here. I would be f–king running Hollywood!”
Some members of the audience gasped, while others cracked up laughing at Rock’s comments.
