Los Angeles police are investigating the shooting death of music producer Leslie André Wakefield, Jr., known as DJ Official.
A gunman opened fire on Wakefield and a male friend Friday as they sat in a car outside the music producer’s home on 78th Street, NBC Los Angeles reported.
The producer’s grandfather was in front of the house mowing the lawn when he heard gunfire, and described what he saw.
“That other guy got shot, in the hip, and when he fell down between the car and the tree. He was telling me to call 911,” Wakefield’s grandfather, Lee Carter, told the TV station. The killer escaped in a black SUV.

Wakefield, 26, was taken to an area hospital where he was pronounced dead, according to Los Angeles County coroner’s records. An autopsy is pending.
As of Monday morning, the LAPD had no information available on a motive for the shooting or if any arrests had been made.
During his career, Wakefield worked with such artists as YG and Cardi B on her Grammy-winning album Invasion of Privacy.
Wakefield was in the studio with Nipsey Hussle just days before the rapper was fatally shot outside his clothing store in South L.A. on March 31.
Family members said Wakefield had no gang ties and described him as a good person. He was father to a newborn son.
