Marques Houston is once again making headlines, this time for claiming the controversial comments he made while explaining the two decade age gap with his wife, were taken “out of context.”
As previously reported, the singer and actor spoke with Page Six earlier this week and said he dated women his own age years ago, but they had too much “baggage.”
He added about dating women with children, “Nothing against single women, but single mothers with children are a red flag for me.”
Houston’s comments were met with swift backlash. Now the No Way Out star has issued an apology.
On Wednesday, he took to his Instagram Story to clarify his remarks.

“I humbly apologize for the comments I have made, and to those who I have offended. I have a deep respect for all women of any age, race or background and my comments made in a recent interview was taken out of context,” Houston shared.
“I work with many independent women every single day, and have ultimate respect for them and what they are able to accomplish in this world, and my choice of words, or how they were taken, does not reflect how I view them,” he continued. “So again, I would like to apologize, and will use this experience to both better myself and the men I’m an example to.”
Since marrying his wife Miya Dickey in 2020, who was 19 at the time, the former member of R&B group Immature has faced backlash and criticism.
Houston’s comments to Page Six sparked more criticism, including from Immature bandmember Young Rome.
Rome wrote in a lengthy statement on Instagram, “It’s unfortunate that in the moment of mourning and grieving my brother, I would have to speak on statements that I do not agree with. But as a member of Immature, I would like to extend my sincerest apologies in regards to the insensitive statements made by my former group member Marques Houston. We were raised by a tribe of strong independent women who faced hardships we will never fully understand.”
Houston is now 41 and his wife is 22.
The couple welcomed their first child together in 2021. Despite the backlash, Houston continues to defend his relationship and insists the age difference doesn’t matter.
In an interview earlier this month on TV One’s Uncensored, Houston said about his marriage, “People don’t understand it.”
