Magic Johnson and his mother offer a look at the NBA legend’s upbringing, before the glitz and glamour, on the next episode on TV One’s Raising Fame.
Co-hosted by Sonya Curry and Lucille O’Neal, the moms of basketball greats Steph Curry and Shaquille O’Neal, this weekend’s episode centers on Johnson, who says his family shaped him into the legend he is today.
In the teaser, the basketball great and entrepreneur explains, “I’m only successful because of my parents.”
Magic’s mother, Christine Johnson, then shares a story of something her son told her: “You taught me never to run from a problem.” Johnson is shown fighting back tears.
The trailer hints that Christine will also reflect on when she first learned her son had gone professional, as well as his announcement of retirement from basketball in 1991, after testing positive for HIV.
Raising Fame offers viewers a deeper understanding of the dedication, sacrifice, and love that contributed to the success of superstars in their rise to fame, according to the official description.
The docuseries kicked off earlier this month with an episode focusing on Oscar-nominated actress Danielle Brooks.
This season also features the families of music artists Usher, John Legend, Fantasia, Jon Batiste, and Chance the Rapper, as well as basketball player Kevin Durant, actor Billy Porter, and late actor Chadwick Boseman.
The series is created by TCS Media. Executive producers include Tracy Chutorian Semler and Eric Semler. Allison Simmons is the executive producer in charge of production for TV One.
Raising Fame: Magic Johnson airs Sunday, July 21, at 10 p.m./9c on TV One.
