The miniseries will also star Cleveland Berto as music producer “Hurby Azor,” Jermel Howard as rapper “Treach,” and Monique Paul as “DJ Spinderella.”

Mario Van Peebles (New Jack City, Baadasssss!) has been tapped to direct.

As previously reported, the project titled Salt-N-Pepa will tell the story of nursing students Cheryl “Salt” James and Sandra “Pepa” Denton as they rise to success in the male-dominated rap industry.

Denton and James will serve as producers on the authorized miniseries and have licensed their music, including the hit singlesLet’s Talk About Sex,” “What a Man,” “Shoop” and “Push It.”

Queen Latifah and Shakim Compere of Flavor Unit have signed on as executive producers, along with Jesse Collins (The New Edition Story). Abdul Williams (The New Edition Story) is writing the script.

The biopic is currently in production in Toronto, and will premiere in 2020.
