At a time when the immigration crisis continues to make headlines, Lifetime has announced the cast of made-for-television movie Torn From Her Arms about a mother and daughter separated at the U.S.-Mexico border.

The film will star Judy Reyes (Devious Maids, Claws), Gloria Reuben (Mr. Robot, ER) and Fátima Molina (Who Killed Sara?), Lifetime said in a press release the week.

The original movie tells the true story of Cindy Madrid and her daughter Jimena, who fled the violence in their home country of El Salvador. The two were separated at the border under the Trump administration’s “Zero Tolerance” immigration policy.

The story gained national attention when a whistleblower leaked an audiotape of six-year-old Jimena crying for her mother.

During their time in detention, Cindy and her daughter said they experienced inhumane living conditions and inadequate medical care. However, it would not be until Pulitzer Prize-winning Propublica journalist Ginger Thompson broke the story that the mother and daughter would be finally able to make their way back to one another.

Reyes portrays Thelma Garcia, a Texas immigration lawyer who works tirelessly to reunite the pair. Reuben co-stars as Thompson; Molina plays Cindy Madrid and her six-year-old daughter is portrayed by Camila Nuñez.

Alan Jonsson Gavica directs the film from a script written by Tawnya Bhattacharya and Ali Laventhol.

Torn From Her Arms is produced by OZY Media and the Motion Picture Corporation of America. Executive producers are Brad Krevoy, Linda Berman, Carlos Watson, Lindsay Roger, Amanda Phillips, Eric Jarboe and Steve McGlothen.

The film is part of Lifetime’s “Ripped From The Headlines” franchise about real events.

Torn From Her Arms is scheduled to debut this fall.
