Former child actress Jonshel Alexander from the film Beasts of the Southern Wild was killed in New Orleans.
Nola.com reports the 22 year old and a man were shot inside a car in New Orleans’ 7th Ward on Saturday. Alexander was dead when paramedics arrived, according to local police.
Alexander played a supporting role as Joy Strong in the 2012 film, which shows the lives of a fictional Bayou community in rural Louisiana.
She auditioned alongside 4,000 other Louisiana natives for a part in the Academy Award-nominated film.

According to Nola.com, the film’s director Benh Zeitlin has been in contact with Alexander’s family after hearing about the shooting.
Police are still looking for a suspect and have recovered a maroon pickup truck they believe was used by the shooter.
