Days after Marvel Studios officially announced the franchise’s new villain, Jonathan Majors expressed his feelings about being replaced in the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

“I’m heartbroken,” Majors told TMZ in an interview published on Wednesday, July 31. “I love him, I love Kang.”

Majors, 34, debuted as Kang the Conqueror in the Disney+ series Loki and played the character in Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania.

He was set to star as Kang in the next phase of the MCU. However, Marvel Studios dropped him on Dec. 18, 2023, immediately after he was found guilty of assaulting his ex-girlfriend, Grace Jabbari.

At the 2024 San Diego Comic-Con convention on Saturday, it was announced that Robert Downey Jr. will play Doctor Doom in the upcoming film Avengers: Doomsday, marking a shift away from Majors’ character, Kang, who was slated to be the lead in the 2026 film Avengers: The Kang Dynasty.

When asked by TMZ if he thought it was unfair that Robert Downey Jr. and Ezra Miller, who both have a history of legal troubles, continue to play superheroes, Majors responded: “I think it’s fair that Mr. Downey has been greeted with patience, curiosity, love and that Mr. Miller has gotten the same treatment. — that they’re being allowed to work their art and be creative at that level.”

“I didn’t really get that,” he added.

In response to why he believes he is being treated differently, Majors said, “Wow. I don’t know.”

The actor was sentenced in April, avoiding jail time but was ordered to complete a 52-week domestic violence prevention program and mental health treatments.

Despite the setback, Majors lined up his first role since his conviction in the supernatural revenge thriller Merciless just last month.
