Jamal Roberts returned to American Idol and performed his new single “Perfect for Me” live on ABC.

Dressed in a red velvet suit, the season 23 winner belted out his R&B ballad on Monday, May 4, and commanded attention from the judges.

The show posted video of the performance on YouTube and the rising star received high marks from viewers.

“Jamal doesn’t just sing a song. He absorbs it into his soul,” one person commented.

“He’s phenomenal! I loooove this song!” another person wrote.

“He has the voice, the stage presence, and now a great song that he delivered with passion and sensuality,” someone else posted.

The episode also saw Paula Abdul return as a guest judge, and OG judge Randy Jackson was back to mentor the top 5 contestants on season 24.

Since winning the singing competition in May 2025, Roberts has been busy. The Mississippi physical education teacher opened for Brandy and Monica on their sold-out The Boy Is Mine Tour.

His first single “Heal” debuted at No. 1 on the Billboard Hot Gospel Songs chart.

He was also nominated for a Grammy Award for best gospel performance/song for the live version of his single “Still,” with gospel music superstar Jonathan McReynolds.

Roberts, 28, was the first Black man to win American Idol, since Ruben Studdard took home the title in 2003.

USA Today reported a record 26 million viewers cast votes on the season 23 finale.
