How to Die Alone will not return for a second season on Hulu.
Natasha Rothwell, who created and starred in the half-hour comedy, confirmed the news Tuesday, Feb. 4 on Instagram.
Rothwell said she was caught off guard when Onyx Collective — a division of Disney Television Studios that brings projects from creators of color and underrepresented voices to Hulu — opted not to renew the show.
“I am shocked, heartbroken and frankly, baffled that Onyx has decided not to move forward with a second season of How to Die Alone,” she told her followers.

The series had a stellar 91 percent score from TV critics on Rotten Tomatoes.
But Variety, which was the first outlet to report on the cancellation, said low viewership was to blame.
Still, Rothwell plans to shop the comedy to other platforms.
“This show took me eight years to bring to life, and if there’s one thing I’ve learned in that time, it’s resilience. I’m not giving up. My team and I are committed to finding How to Die Alone a new home because stories like this matter,” she explained. “Now more than ever, television that amplifies previously unheard voices, and that prioritizes hiring and casting decisions that accurately reflect the diversity of the world, is essential.”
The actress played Mel, a “broke, fat, Black JFK airport employee, who’s never been in love,” according to the official description. Her life takes an unexpected turn after an accidental brush with death.
The cast also included Conrad Ricamora, Jocko Sims, and KeiLyn Durrel Jones. Bashir Salahuddin had a recurring guest role.
Rothwell and Vera Santamaria served as co-showrunners and executive producers. Desiree Akhavan was also an executive producer.
The series premiered on Sept. 13, 2024.
Beyond this project, Rothwell is best known for her role as “Kelli” in HBO’s Insecure, where she also served as a writer and producer. She has also appeared in The White Lotus and previously worked as a writer for Saturday Night Live.
