Hunter Killer — a submarine action film about an American mission to stop a Russian coup — took a beating at the weekend box office courtesy of Halloween and several other holdovers.
The newly released thriller, starring Gerard Butler, Gary Oldman and Common, opened with a lukewarm $6.7 million from 2,728 theaters across North America, according to Box Office Mojo.
That added up to an average $2,438 per location and a fifth place finish.
Critics were also underwhelmed, giving the film a 36 percent on Rotten Tomatoes, with such descriptions as “generic,” “silly” and “sinks to the bottom.”
