“I don’t know how it started. It’s like a hole opened up in the world, leading straight to the center of nothingness,” Niecy Nash-Betts says in the teaser trailer for FX’s upcoming series Grotesquerie

The cable network released the first teaser on Thursday, Aug. 15, which shows a string of heinous crimes unfolding in a small community.

Nash-Betts plays Detective Lois Tryon in the horror drama from creator and writer Ryan Murphy, Jon Robin Baitz and Joe Baken.

The 10-episode series follows multiple crimes that have left a small community unsettled. Detective Tryon feels these crimes are personal, as if someone — or something — is taunting her.

“With no leads and unsure of where to turn, she accepts the help of Sister Megan (Micaela Diamond). However, they find themselves ensnared in a sinister web that only seems to raise more questions than answers,” according to the official description.

The teaser shows a woman screaming as a narrator says, “This killer is sermonizing, proselytizing, preaching. To understand this monster, we have to decipher these murders.”

Along with Nash-Betts and Diamond, the drama stars Courtney B. Vance as “Marshall Tryon,” Lesley Manville as “Nurse Redd,” Nicholas Alexander Chavez as “Father Charlie,” Raven Goodwin as “Merritt Tryon.” NFL star Travis Kelce also has a small role.

The series marks a reunion for Nash-Betts and Ryan Murphy.

The actress won a 2023 Emmy Award for her portrayal of Glenda Cleveland in Netflix’s Dahmer – Monster: The Jeffrey Dahmer Story, also created by Murphy. Cleveland was Dahmer’s neighbor who repeatedly alerted police to his crimes, but her warnings were ignored.

The show is directed by Max Winkler, Murphy, Alexis Martin Woodall, and Elegance Bratton.

20th Television produces. Executive producers include Murphy, Woodall, Baitz, Baken, Winkler, Nash-Betts, Vance, Peter Liguori, Nissa Diederich, Eric Kovtun, and Scott Robertson.

Grotesquerie premieres Sept. 25 on FX and streams the next day on Hulu.
