Gabourey Sidibe to Play a Homeless Mother in Lifetime’s ‘Give Me Back My Daughter’

Gabourey Sidibe is taking on the role of a homeless mother fighting for custody of her child in the upcoming Lifetime movie Give Me Back My Daughter.

The cable network announced details on the new original film this week.

Sidibe, an Oscar-nominated and NAACP Image Award-winning actress (Precious) leads the cast as Renee, a single mother who faces one challenge after another, including losing her job and eviction.

Cadence Reese (Rustin) co-stars as her daughter Imani.

“Renee refuses any public assistance, but her desperation leads to a difficult decision: leaving her daughter in the car during a job interview, which results in her arrest and Imani being taken by Child Protective Services,” according to the official description.

As Renee fights to be reunited with her child, the determined mother realizes she can’t do it alone.

“With the help of new friends, she starts to see a glimmer of hope in her situation and remains steadfast in her determination to do whatever it takes to be reunited with her daughter,” per Lifetime.

Walnette Santiago, Sean Anthony Baker, and Myles Truitt also have roles in the film.

The movie is produced by Swirl Films for Lifetime. Executive producers include Leslie Greif, Jason Egenberg, Eric Tomosunas, and Ron Robinson. Kelley Kali directs from a script written by Xavier Burgin.

Give Me Back My Daughter premieres Saturday April 5 at 8p/7c on Lifetime.
